Petros Stangos was born in Thessaloniki in 1952. He holds a PhD degree (Doctorat d’Etat) in international law from the Faculty of Law of the University of Dijon, France (1979). He joined the teaching and research staff of the Faculty of Law of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) in 1982, as a lecturer. He became a full professor at the same Faculty in 1997 where, until his promotion to professor emeritus (October 2020), he was teaching EU law, International economic law and European human rights law (Jean Monnet Chair). He was President of the AUTh’s Centre for European Legal Culture (2018-2023). Petros Stangos has been teaching the European law at many European universities. He has worked in institutions of both the EU and the Council of Europe. Among other functions, he was member (2009-2020) and vice-president (2013-2016) of the European Committee of Social Rights, in Strasbourg. He has directed or participated in many European and Greek research projects, mainly in the field of anti-discrimination law and protection of fundamental rights. His writings focus on EU institutional and economic law, European and national law for the protection of civil and social rights, anti-discrimination, International economic law and Public international law.
